Travel as you go

What does it mean to ‘Travel as you go’ and why would you do it?
Travel as you go means making your travel choices and decisions in the moment, rather than following a strict, pre-planned itinerary. It implies flexibility and an open-minded approach to travel, allowing for spontaneity and the freedom to discover new things as you progress on your journey.
There can be many different levels of traveling as you go, all depending on how adventurous you want to be.  Below are some examples of different planning levels.
Extreme: Other than your first destination, you don't have much else planned.  You know you want to go to Paris and that's it.  You purchased a one-way ticket and you're on your way.  You plan to show up, find a place to stay, explore the city and stumble on things to do.  You are not sure exactly how long you will stay, where you are going next and when you will return home.

Moderate: You know your destinations and have booked accommodations at some locations, but not others.  You have not booked many activities and plan to find things to do when you are there.  Other than your flights to and from your first and last location, you have not booked any other transportation.  You're still free to stay as long as you like in some places and leave when you are ready.  You are free to change your plans and visit different locations so long as you arrive at certain ones where you have booked your accommodations.

Mild: You know your exact locations and have booked your transportation between them as well as all your accommodations.  You want to be free to find things to do and other than a few activities, you have no other plans set in stone.

Pre-Planned: This is the category most travelers fall into, having everything planned and pre-booked for a fixed itinerary.  You know exactly where you are going, when you will arrive and depart, what transportation you are taking between each location, where you are staying and what you will be doing.  The Trip Builder allows you to do all of this, but that is not the topic of this page.  See our other pages on planning and trip examples.
Now, rather than using the Trip Builder to pre-plan your entire trip, you can use the Mobile Trip Profile to 'Travel as you go'.  You can easily add the next location you plan to visit, along with activities as you need them.  For example, you have just arrived in London and plan to stay a week before heading off to another location. You’re not exactly sure where you will go, but when you decide, you simply add the location with a couple of clicks and then update the details.  Once added, you can just as easily add activities to the location such as your hotel, transportation, and other attractions.  By doing this, you get the full power of the Mobile Trip Profile, to guide you through your journey.

Tip: When 'Traveling on the go', consider the season in which you will be traveling.  How adventurous and how un-planned you can be may be far easier during off-peak travel seasons, so do some research.  Also, if there are large festivals planned, such as Oktoberfest in Munch, you may have an extremely hard time finding an affordable place to stay, if you can find anything at all.

Prior to your trip, using the Trip Builder, perform the following for a 'Travel as you go' type of trip.

Step 1: Create your trip and give it a title and initial departure date.
Step 2: Add locations for your home location and your initial destination.
Step 3: Add any activities required for your home location such as 'Board Pets' and your initial transportation to your first location.
Step 4: If you know other trip details, add them.  If you don't, and plan to do everything as you go, you are set.

Now, as you are traveling, use the Mobile Trip Profile to make trip updates.  (Remember, you must first create your trip as described in Step 1)

Step 5: Add new locations when you need to.
Step 6: Add activities to your new locations when required.

Remember, adding new locations and activities will give you the full power of the Mobile Trip Profile to guide you as you travel, including single click access to News, Photos, Information, Weather, Location Maps including search, Route Maps and more.  If you have applied Premium Services, you may be able to Blog and Upload Photos directly to your trip activities.
