Psyche Revived by the Kiss of Love This marble sculpture is by Antonio Canova (1757-1822). Winged Victory of Somothrace From Greece, late 3rd-early 2nd century BC. Michelangelo's Dying Slave Michelangelo sculpted this work between 1513 and 1520 as part of a group of statues for th ebase of the tomb of Pope Julius II in Rome. Venus de Milo Found in 1820 on the island of Milo in Greece, this ideal of feminine beauty was made in the Hellenistic Age at the end of the 2nd century BC. Raft of the Medusa The Raft of the Medusa is an oil painting of 1818–1819 by the French Romantic painter and lithographer Théodore Géricault (1791–1824). Completed when the artist was 27, the work has become an icon of French Romanticism. It is an over-life-size painting that depicts a moment from the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of today's Mauritania on 2 July 1816. On 5 July 1816, at least 147 people were set adrift on a hurriedly constructed raft; all but 15 died in the 13 days before their rescue, and those who survived endured starvation and dehydration and practiced cannibalism. The event became an international scandal, in part because its cause was widely attributed to the incompetence of the French captain. Saint-Gatien's Cathedral was built between 1170 and 1547. Tours - Cathedrale St. Gatien Inside the cathedral Wisteria Wisteria tree with the bright purple flowers Chambord Chateau https://www.chambord.org/en/ The Chateau de Chambord hunting lodge is located ten miles east of Blois, and four kilometers from the Loire, in countryside surrounded by woods. The chateau has about 400 rooms, more than 80 staircases, 365 fireplaces resembling a small town, and an exceptional number of towers, high ceilings, pointed domes graceful pinnacles. Interesting to note, you can purchase the Chambord Liquor in town in plain glass bottles at a reasonable price compared to the expensive exported round-crown bottles you by in the States. Chambord Chateau - Leonardo Da Vinci double helix stairs Leonardo Da Vinci designed the double helix spiral staircase. The story goes that the king's concubines could descend on one side while the queen was ascending on the other, each spiraling around and neither would see the other. Cheverny http://www.chateau-cheverny.fr/en/ Cheverny - The hunting hounds Fougeres Sur Bievre http://www.fougeres-sur-bievre.fr/en This is actually a castle, differing in construction from the regions chateaus. It was designed and built by ship builders, hence the design of the room resembles the hull of a boat in it's construction. The church was completed in 1733, after 134 years of start and stop construction. Saint-Sulpice was built over the foundations of an older church which, in turn, was reputed to have been constructed on top of an ancient temple of the goddess Isis. The fact that the city of Paris was probably named after Isis ("par-Isis"), gives this church-upon-church-upon-temple edifice a unique historical stature. St. Sulpice Luxembourg Gardens The gardens are very large and have sculpted statues throughout the park. It is a very nice place to come on a nice afternoon to sit, relax and watch the people. This is one of our favorite place to come and just do nothing. Luxembourg Gardens Catacombs We toured the catacombs which are very deep underground. It's takes over an hour to go through the different tunnels. Each tunnel is lined with neatly stacked bones, some in various patterns. In 1786 a monumental project began here: the removal of the millions of skulls and bones from unsanitary city cemetery in Les Halles to the ancient quarries formed by excavations at the base of the three "mountains": Montparnasse, Montrouge and Montsouris. It took 15 months to transport the bones and rotting corpses at night across the city in huge carts to their new resting place. Just before the Revolution, the Comte d'Artois (later Charles X) threw wild parties in the catacombs, and during World War II the French Resistance set up its headquarters here. Above the door outside are the words "Stop! This is the empire of death." Catacombs Pantheon We had never toured the Pantheon before on previous trips to Paris. We are glad we finally did this time. We arrived just in time to attend a guided tour to the top of the dome. The Pantheon is based on the one in Rome and has 22 Corinthian columns. When Louis XV recovered from desperate illness in 1744, he was so grateful to be alive that he conceived a magnificent church to honor Sainte Genevieve. Work begin in 1764 and was completed in 1790. With the Revolution underway, the church was soon turned into a pantheon - a location for the tombs of France's good and great. His body is entombed in the large red marble sarcophagus. The Dome Church is also a war museum. Dome Church - Napoleon's Tomb Montparnasse Cemetery The cemetery was planned by Napoleon outside the city walls to replace the numerous congested small cemeteries within the old city, viewed as a health hazard at the turn of the 19th century. Montparnasse Cemetery There are several interesting tomb stones and one of our favorites is poet's Charles Pigeon Family Tomb. (the couple in bed) Pompidou Center The center is like a building turned inside out: escalators, elevators, air and water ducts and even the massive steel struts that are the building's skeleton have all been placed on the outside.
